Sporting Highlight:

World Champion, 2010 World Mountain Bike Single Speed Championships, New Zealand, “Best Dressed”

1st place, 2013 World Mountain Bike Single Speed Championships, Italy, “People’s choice Best Dressed”

Day Job:

Automotive artisan. Head (and only) wrench, part owner versatility king and bettermerchant @ Fixations. Coffee maker, milk frother to the stars

Motorsport History:

Immersed in motorsport since my father raced in the sixties and we always had cars to play with. His Mark2 Jaguar saloon being the prime cat(alyst) – see what I did there? I was never as good as those around me but remember thinking “Hey! I really can-do this” whilst controlling over-steer between two other cars going 90 mph through the corner “Bomb Bay” at Wigram Wings and Wheels

Karts:

Racing Karts was used by my father to distract the teenage me from motorcycles

Worked on:

Real GT40’s, ex Denny Hulme Lola T70, Cooper Climax & Bristols, Ferraris, Cobras, Loti, Alfas, Frenchies, Porsche, TVR, Marcos, Jaguar, BMW, Abarth, Sunbeam, Chevron, Mustang…Servicing and maintenance. Restoration, recreation, modification, race preparation, adaption…Versatile.

Internationally and across the nation

Street Races:

Lyttelton, Nelson, Queenstown, Dunedin and on a motorcycle, Greymouth.

Hawkswood:

I think I’ve competed 10 of the 13 events. Once in a Porsche 911RS, getting 2nd to my client in his E-type Jaguar. The owner of the 911 a disgruntled 3rd. Once in an Audi coupe-front wheel drive V6…So unfortunately not a 5-cylinder 4wd Quattro Coupe. About 8 times with this Peugeot 106 Rallye

SIERDC:

First attempt in about 2007 with my client and his Porsche 911. A driver error in pit lane put the gearbox, and us out before I even got in the car. But self-determination and a Peugeot has enabled regular entries since 2014….

Started in a soaking wet 1 hour at Levels. The 3-hour beckoned… As does a 4,6, 10,12 or 24 hour

Motorsport Highlight:

Cibie Super Oscar spotlights. Because we might be out late

Motorsport Lowlight:

We took them out for brake ducts

Random Fact:

People often ask us why we drive such a small car. Well, we have nothing else to compensate for

When I’m not driving:

Watching movies, or I’m working.

Best Drive:

Running late, so, 15 hours non-stop across France and Italy to Modena. Driving a Mercedes Sprinter van, towing $250,000 worth of 1964 AC Cobra to the start of a week-long Rally. Flat out. I’m still high on the coffee and gourmet jelly bean diet

Day Job:

Brand builder. Lead driver, sales, sponsorship, event and brand bettermerchant and owner @ REPRESENT

Motorsport History:

Late comer to the sport, via car clubs, track days, season of classic racing, a hill climb and regular sealed sprints at Hawkswood

Karts:

I wish. To date only through blood and marriage, late uncle Glenn Tremain raced Super Karts for years. 2nd Cousin Bradley Tremain (manages a V8 supercars team) and wife’s 2nd Cousin Josh Bethune both former karters

Worked on:

It is best to leave that to the professionals! Working on my driving

Street Races:

Being a late comer to the sport, No. Unimaginable now, I was in Wellington in 1994 when the final International round of the Wellington 500 was on, being into driving (on the roads with my mates) but not into motor racing I found it noisy and offensive and didn’t watch! Gutted to have missed driving in Dunedin’s epic street race. Pleased to state I enjoyed watching it at least once #pleasebringitback. Denniston Hill Climb, Waimate 50 on bucket list.

Hawkswood:

One of my favourite days of the year. Regular since 2007, so far, have only bought one bridge! Started in my TVR 3000S and have driven Fiat Uno Turbo, Volvo 850R Estate and Alfa Suds at this fantastic event. Le Coq Noir beckons for 2020. I encourage everyone to come and part take or watch

SIERDC:

Every season since 2016. Having not raced circuits since 2010 took the wheel at round 2 Ruapuna. First drive of Pugalicious was to the circuit.    Spun turn 6, lap 1 in qually before jumping in for the second half of the race!

Motorsport Highlight:

Thanks to an observant Brendan Leitch R2 2019 at Highlands had Seriously Fun positioned in the pits between two of my favourite three race car drivers being Paul Radisich and John McIntyre!

Note: there are many drivers I admire. Hayden Paddon rounds out my personal top three. In 2008 I was fortunate to use a friend’s seat at Hayden’s annual sponsors ride day. This led to me sponsoring Hayden in my former role as New Balance New Zealand Sponsorship and Events Manager.

Motorsport Lowlight:

Ahead of the 2019 SIERDC championships our team were going to be running the ex-Scuderia His-Excellency-the-President Le Mans spec Audi R8 GTfree with a damaged bumper that ran at Le Mans and Sebring a couple of years back. There was some confusion with the Nigerian seller as to whether we were buying the car or one, wheel bolt…

Random Fact:

Bad habits extend to collecting old bikes. They store easier than cars!

When I’m not driving:

Hanging with my wife Kylie and girls Hannah and Emily. Watching movies, running or swimming. Otherwise I am dreaming up events / working – that is where I get my “over distance training”

SIERDC

South Island Endurance Racing Drivers Club Championship

SIERDC is special. A competitor centric, highly professional, demanding, and intense multiple round championship for both 1-hour and 3-hour drivers and teams. Attracting competitors back year after year to do it all again. Their secret a very respectful, friendly, and even relaxed attitude between competitors sees close racing with very high driver standards while incorporating the most diverse range of cars and drivers you are likely to find anywhere. The willingness to work together and help each other in the pits is second to none and the pre round social functions and post-race prize giving’s a chance to unwind and connect with like-minded people who inevitably become friends.

Usually consisting of three rounds with a national championship alternating between New Zealand’s North and South Islands every other year. The top twenty cars from the respective Island’s series invited to contest the New Zealand Endurance Championships.

Over the years the sophistication, quality and speed of cars has increased. Despite this you can effectively still run a safe and cheap vehicle with several competitors starting their motorsport careers in 2k cup (a series that requires cars to have a value of $2,000 before safety features) and then running those same cars in the South Island Endurance Series.

By contrast the recent series had up to ten GT3 cars and seven TCR cars compete. Both 1-hour and 3-hour series are comprised of different classes making for close racing within respective classes in addition to the overall race podium and position. The 3-hour series boasts five classes from Class E (GT3 type cars) to Class A (0-2000cc) with classes A – D being the same for the 1-hour but excluding both Class E cars and professional drivers. Professional drivers are welcomed in the 3-hour series and must pair up with an amateur driver.

Several top SIERDC drivers go on to earn / receive / pay for, overseas drives in a variety of championships throughout Asia, Oceania, and Europe, with the series now a proven development ground. As such there are many highly skilled, talented established and developing drivers competing. In addition, legendary Pro drivers compete because they simply love both racing and the series. Being classified as a Pro driver is a big deal with many super quick and experienced divers with a strong national resume still chasing classification with the sport. Ultimately everyone is racing for fun and chocolate fish with the winners taking away the satisfaction of doing a better job than everyone else.

SCAPE Public Art – An Evening with Alastair Caldwell      13th Jan 2020

SCAPE’s own event fundraiser with motor racing legend Alastair Caldwell. Alastair shared his inspirational story of a car-mad boy who grew up in Hamilton, went to England, got a job as a cleaner at McLaren, and ended up McLaren Formula One Team Manager, winning the 1974 and 1976 World Championships with Emerson Fittipaldi and James Hunt.

Long time SIERDC racer Lindsay O’Donnell fired up his 1967 McLaren M4 A formula 2 (with a French connection) in the bar’s outdoor courtyard! SFun can confirm its loud and awesome! This was peer reviewed and verified by residents of several neighbouring residential blocks.

Seriously Fun crew of Timo St Anton, Le Ton Tremain and John Burt were thrilled to be guests of Jane and Anthony Leighs who made this event happen and are long time SCAPE supporters. It was fantastic event, exceeded expectations, highly entertaining and insightful with way more belly laughs than thought possible.

Thank-you SCAPE, and those who made this experience possible. 10/10.

SCAPE Public Art installs public art in Christchurch enhancing the urban centre and raising the profile for public art since 1998. SCAPE Public Art are the largest producer of new contemporary public artwork in New Zealand.

HOW TO DRIVE

Chances are if you are reading this then you are likely aware that driving is a skill.

As part of our objective of filling in the gaps of how to go car racing, it would be remiss of us to not first discuss how to drive…

Please note we are NOT qualified driving instructors or suitably qualified racing driver instructors, and we encourage and recommend everyone to use professional services.

We look forward to recommending a selection of professional driver trainers and aids in New Zealand.

Like any competency, driving requires practise, thought, understanding, more practise and ideally training. To be proficient takes dedication, time, a willingness to improve and potentially to learn from mistakes. Training is essential. Every coach can benefit from having a coach. A level of frequency / currency is also important to be effective.

Every race car driver knows you can always be a better driver.

Every athlete knows a better performance is possible.

HOW TO GO RACING

Answers to those questions you did not know you had                                                                                                            Photo Credit: Unknown

We want to promote the sport. We want people to get involved. We want people to be safe.

New Zealand is a car crazy nation. We love our cars and must have per capita one of the highest rates of enthusiast cars in the world. The common belief is if there were only seven of a particular model ever made and three were written off or destroyed, it’s highly likely at least one of them is in NZ!

We want to encourage more people to get off the streets and onto the track developing their skills becoming more confident and ultimately racing. There are several very good series around the country so there will be something close to home likely with good people to help along the way.

If you have not previously been involved in the sport before it can be a daunting process even knowing how to get started or what it really involves.

A very large number of people go for a run for fun, fitness, exercise, and enjoyment, some run to make their cars faster. All are valid! A reasonable number of people do the big annual city fun run, many even do the ½ marathon. Very few people join the local running club where running companions, advice, coaching, better experiences, results, and friendships await. Rarely does a person allow themselves to be their best version or “invest” in the sport they enjoy because of perceived barriers…

Our “How to go Racing” guide aims to provide a comprehensive insight, into getting more enjoyment out of your passion for cars, while removing many perceived barriers from the sport. If you have made it this far, we assume you like driving and are at least keen to learn more. Over time we will walk the talk with you and aim to fill in the grass roots gaps. SFun will overview what you will need to do, learn, and spend to get stared.

One the first questions people always jump to is budget and cost to go racing. The bad news is there is no limit the good news is once you have a car and relevant equipment it can be enjoyed on a modest budget. We believe there are a bunch of questions to answer way before that point.

As part of filling in the gaps we will be undertaking a race car build project. This will involve taking a cheap road car in this case $2,500 and making it lighter and safer, then getting it complied and taking it racing. You will be able to follow our progress and we will update you on costs involved as the project plays out.

In addition to building a car (it’s often a lot cheaper to simply buy an existing race car and develop it to suit) we will also cover off important but overlooked questions and checklists along the way to hopefully give you the car enthusiast who wants more enjoyment from their passion to be able to make a decision if this is a path you want to take.

For Le Ton who was never exposed to the sport but always enjoyed driving it was a gradual evolution and manifestation over several years before the confidence and decision was made to go racing. Looking back each small step was exciting and rewarding, at the time there was no end goal of going racing, that was way too scary a concept reserved for real racing drivers and those with lots of disposal income. Simply following a passion and getting more involved ultimately progressed into more enjoyment in safer more controlled environments.
